ARTIST STATEMENT

I create delicate watercolor mosaics that explore color, pattern and texture using paper and pigments on canvas. I investigate new approaches towards heritage art forms such as mosaic art and batik through my creative practice as a response to my own experiences and personal history. On a symbolic level, I relate to the idea of life being a mosaic where experiences are like fragments which become more telling when they are pieced together and hence, I delve into the process of deconstructing and reconstructing my own art to create a painting.

The base work for these mosaics is created using the techniques of Batik which I reinterpret on paper as this art form had a strong presence in my childhood home in India in the form of bedspreads, pillowcases and other home décor.

BIOGRAPHY

Apoorva was born and raised in India and now lives in the United States. She uses fluid pigments to express herself artistically. She adapts the techniques of Batik to create her highly expressive paper mosaics through which she explores themes of memory, connection and nostalgia. Apoorva’s creations rest on a fine line between abstraction and representation and her work focuses on dramatic juxtapositions – be it juxtaposing humble found objects like eggshells with luxurious materials like golf leaf or working with rough and smooth textures. She creates a tactile visual language that’s uniquely her own.
